What Makes a tasty Smokehouse Burger?
In our opinion, the most important thing about a smokehouse burger is the smoke taste. That is really what separates these from something you can cook on a grill or on the stove since it is hard to replicate anywhere but the smoker. The amount or kind of smoke flavor you get on these is totally dependent on the type of wood you burn and type of smoker used. Everyone has their own preferences for the level of smoke they like, but we find going mild is the best all around way to prepare these.
Hence, our preference for these burgers is using a pellet smoker, ideally with apple or cherry wood, but it doesn’t matter too much. We prefer a mild smoke flavor along with the easy cooking a pellet smoker provides for these smokehouse burgers but have also made these on our Weber Smokey Mountain several times. Also, given that people generally make these for a party or multiple people, the hands-off cooking and the subtle smoke flavor of a pellet smoker allow you to enjoy your guests’ company and also please the widest range of tastes.
Key Ingredients
The only ingredients needed for these smokehouse burgers are a good quality beef and the seasonings of your choice. We generally hit the patties with some Garlic Jalapeno Rub and some Sweet BBQ Rub. However, salt + pepper + garlic are a fine, simple seasoning to use on these. A tip is you can use Pickapeppa Sauce to give them a unique flavor as well! The seasonings you use do make a big impact on the flavor of the burgers, but the good thing is, there’s not really a “bad,” combination of seasonings for these. When in doubt, just keep it simple and they will still turn out phenomenal.
Making the Smokehouse Burgers
There really isn’t too much you have to do to make these smokehouse burgers come together. All you have to do is form the patties, get your smoker fired up to 350-375 ,season the patties and set them on the grill until they temperature probe around 160 (around 20-30 minutes) or your desired doneness.
This is a recipe that can be paired with just about any side and toppings. Some good toppings we have found are cheese of your choice (prefer pepperjack or cheddar) and vegetables like onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and avocado. You can also spice these up a bit with jalapenos and fried onions. Once they are cooked, it is really up to you to decide how to top them the way you like them best.
